The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, has said Iran’s growing status as a “great and influential power” is directly connected to its population growth, urging stronger efforts to promote childbearing and address demographic decline.
In a message marking National Population Day, he argued that Iran’s long-term strategic strength depends not only on political or military factors but also on sustaining population expansion. He described population growth as a “strategic necessity” rather than merely a corrective measure for past policy gaps.
He stated that continued population increase would enable Iran to achieve greater regional and global influence and support what he called the development of a “new Islamic Iranian civilization.”
The Leader also praised grassroots activists promoting family growth and said cultural efforts encouraging childbirth could play a significant role in shaping Iran’s future.
The remarks come amid ongoing concerns from Iranian officials about demographic trends, including reports warning of an aging population and projections that a significant share of citizens could be over 60 within the next few decades.
According to the broader message, Iran’s leadership views demographic policy as part of its long-term national strategy, linking population trends with economic strength, security, and international influence.
