The Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a 33-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, to death for the murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga.
Nelson, said to be an usher in a new-generation church in Uyo, was convicted for killing Effanga on February 6, 2025, before fleeing with her mobile phone.
According to reports presented before the court, the convict visited the deceased at her residence located at No. 102 Aka Road, opposite NEPA Line, Uyo, around 7 a.m. on the day of the incident. He had reportedly gone there to use her phone to upload birthday pictures on social media.
An argument later broke out between the two over the phone, leading to a violent struggle. During the altercation, Nelson allegedly slammed the victim’s head against a wall and strangled her to death.
After the incident, he escaped with the deceased’s phone but was later tracked down by security operatives on February 8, 2025, during an overnight church service at a church located along Nsikak Eduok Avenue in Uyo.
Investigators said the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ekpo Ntekim found Nelson guilty on a two-count charge bordering on murder and stealing. The court subsequently sentenced him to death by hanging or lethal injection for the murder charge.
The judge further ruled that the punishment for stealing was covered by the death sentence already imposed on the convict.
