16 Killed in Twin Violent Attacks in Northern Honduras

At least 16 people have been killed in two separate violent incidents in northern Honduras, authorities said on Thursday, highlighting the country’s continuing security challenges.

The deadliest attack occurred on a palm plantation in Rigores, within the municipality of Trujillo, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on farm workers and residents gathered near a church. Police spokesperson Edgardo Barahona said at least 10 people were confirmed dead, though the toll could rise as investigations continue.

Witnesses said armed attackers fired indiscriminately, leaving bodies scattered around the area. Local reports indicated that several women, including three sisters, were among the victims. Authorities have not yet identified a motive, but the region has long experienced violent disputes linked to land ownership and agricultural conflicts.

Following the massacre, Honduras military chief General Hector Benjamin Valerio Ardon pledged full support from the armed forces to track down those responsible.

In a separate incident in the Cortes department near the Guatemalan border, six police officers were killed during an anti-gang operation in Omoa. According to officials, officers from the Anti-Maras, Gangs and Organised Crime Police Directorate (DIPAMPCO) were ambushed while searching a building for suspects.

Among those killed was Deputy Commissioner Lester Amador. Authorities believe some suspects may also have been wounded or killed during the exchange of gunfire.

The Honduran National Police announced that security forces would immediately intensify operations in the affected regions, promising to bring those responsible to justice and strengthen protection for vulnerable communities.

Honduras has struggled with gang violence, organised crime, and rural land disputes for years. Although a nationwide state of emergency introduced in 2022 ended earlier this year, critics continue to raise concerns about violence and human rights abuses linked to security operations.
