Victor Attah International Airport to Launch International Flights on May 2

Victor Attah International Airport is set to begin international flight operations on May 2, 2026, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The first international flight will connect Uyo to Accra, Ghana, with services operated by Ibom Air. The return flight from Accra is scheduled for May 3, officially commencing international operations at the airport.

The announcement was made by Umo Eno, who described the development as a significant step forward for the state’s economic growth. He noted that the upgrade to international status followed approval from Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Boost for connectivity and economic growth

Governor Eno said the launch would enhance connectivity between Nigeria and other countries, while also boosting tourism, trade, and investment opportunities in Akwa Ibom State.

He expressed appreciation to key stakeholders, including Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, for their roles in facilitating the airport’s upgrade and readiness for international operations.

Background to the upgrade

The Federal Government approved the airport’s upgrade to international status in November 2025. Following the approval, agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) began preparations for international passenger processing.

Officials noted that much of the required infrastructure was already in place, allowing for a relatively swift transition.

Growing aviation development across states

The move reflects a broader trend among Nigerian states investing in aviation infrastructure to support economic development. Several states, including Oyo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Ogun, have initiated projects aimed at expanding airport capacity and improving air travel services.

With the launch of international operations, Victor Attah International Airport is expected to play a key role in regional connectivity and position Akwa Ibom as an emerging hub for travel and commerce in West Africa.
