FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has suspended a director of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for allegedly issuing illegal building approvals for structures constructed on waterways in Abuja.
Wike disclosed this during a media briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following recent flooding in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
The suspension comes after a flash flood on August 16 left residents stranded and submerged vehicles in areas including Maitama, Wuse 2, Gudu and Lokogoma. The flooding also affected roads and disrupted businesses and transportation.
Following the incident, Wike ordered the immediate demolition of buildings obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas. The FCT Administration subsequently began demolishing structures built on designated water channels.
According to Wike, the suspended FCDA director was sanctioned in accordance with civil service regulations for allegedly granting approvals for construction on waterways.
He, however, said illegal construction was not the only cause of the flooding, noting that climate change had also contributed to the situation.
Wike further disclosed that another official had been subjected to disciplinary action for allegedly reallocating parklands under the guise of security-related clearance.
The minister said a task force led by the FCDA executive secretary and the director of development control had been deployed to assess areas affected by the flooding, including Lugbe and Lokogoma.
Wike said preliminary findings indicated that some areas had suffered from years of violations of the Abuja masterplan, with structures allegedly built on natural waterways and designated road corridors without valid approvals.
He warned that the FCT Administration would demolish any structure found obstructing waterways and would not recognise approvals obtained through undue influence.
The minister also said enforcement would be intensified along the Airport Road corridor and in Lokogoma to address illegal developments and prevent further flooding.
