Two-Storey Building Collapses in Anambra, No Casualty Reported

A two-storey residential building has collapsed in Inyaba-Umudim, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with no fatalities reported.

The incident occurred on Sunday and was confirmed on Monday by the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu.

Ojukwu visited the scene to assess the situation and described the collapse as unfortunate, while expressing relief that no lives were lost.

He said a nearby three-storey building had been marked for evacuation to protect its occupants and allow authorities to conduct an integrity assessment.

According to the commissioner, buildings within the area will undergo mandatory structural integrity tests, while those found to be unsafe will be demolished.

Ojukwu said preliminary findings indicated that the collapsed structure was poorly constructed and had been built without the required approval from the ministry. He added that the building was constructed against the perimeter wall of an existing three-storey building.

“We will evacuate all the occupants of the three-storey building, which shares the same compound with the collapsed structure,” he said.

The commissioner also announced plans for a statewide demolition exercise targeting buildings constructed on the perimeter fences of existing structures, those that violate mandatory setback requirements, and buildings erected without the necessary government approvals.
