The Nigeria Police Force has paid N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers.
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu presented the cheques to the beneficiaries on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Disu, the payments covered insurance policy years from 2017/2018 to 2024/2025, including outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after earlier partial settlements.
The IGP said the total payment amounted to N2,317,177,094, describing the funds as legitimate entitlements for officers who lost their lives while serving the country.
Disu said the challenging security situation had resulted in the deaths of several police personnel during attacks and operations across Nigeria. He cited officers killed in Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who died during a rescue mission in Zamfara State, and 10 officers recently ambushed and killed in Kebbi State.
He expressed sympathy to the families, noting that while no amount of money could replace their loved ones, the payments represented the police institution's responsibility to the families of fallen officers.
The IGP urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for the education and welfare of children and other dependants left behind.
Disu also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of serving police personnel, including working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and other legitimate benefits.
He further called on insurance companies to settle claims promptly, stressing that insurance payments could provide an important lifeline to families who had lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force's Insurance Unit has also visited six commands and more than 50 divisions and formations in the Federal Capital Territory over the past two months to educate personnel and their families on how to access available insurance benefits.
