Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused the United States of violating its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), saying Washington began making excessive demands less than two weeks after US President Donald Trump signed the agreement.
Speaking at the 26th Summit of the Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday, Pezeshkian said Iran remained committed to international agreements and called on the United States to return to its obligations under the memorandum.
According to Pezeshkian, the US initially honored the agreement for less than two weeks before changing its position and introducing what he described as excessive demands.
He said Iran responded to what it considered a violation of US commitments.
“If the United States returns to its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately do the same,” Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian president also accused the United States and Israel of aggression against Iran and said their actions violated the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
Pezeshkian said the region continues to face interconnected security challenges, including terrorism, violent extremism, drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and cybercrime.
He also criticized what he described as unilateralism, the use of military force, sanctions and the use of economic and technological tools to pressure developing countries.
According to the Iranian president, security and economic development are closely linked and should be addressed together by the SCO.
Pezeshkian proposed several economic initiatives, including greater financial and banking cooperation, the establishment of an SCO bank, the creation of an export and investment insurance union, and the formation of an SCO energy consortium.
On security, he proposed establishing a strategic security studies centre within the SCO to assess emerging threats, monitor regional security developments and provide recommendations aimed at strengthening stability.
Pezeshkian also expressed Iran’s readiness to participate actively in initiatives designed to strengthen cooperation, cohesion and coordination among SCO member states.
