Iranian authorities say a US airstrike hit a house during a wedding celebration in Kuhestak, in Sirik County, southern Iran, killing at least five people, including a child, and injuring 63 others.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the reported attack as “brutal,” saying civilians, including women and children, were among those affected.
Iran’s Ministry of Health official Hossein Kermanpour said the dead included a child and reported that electricity and telephone services had been disrupted following the strike.
Images released by the Iranian Red Crescent showed a damaged building with blown-out walls and windows, while debris was scattered around the area. Several injured children were also seen receiving treatment at a hospital.
Sirik County Governor Reza Shahidiyan told Iranian state broadcaster IRIB that 63 people were wounded and that 50 of those affected were women and children. He said the injured were taken to a hospital in nearby Minab and were in stable condition.
A child who survived the blast told Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency that he heard fighter jets before the explosion. He said the blast was extremely powerful and caused bricks, stones and cement to strike people at the scene.
The reported attack came after the US military announced a new wave of strikes against what it described as Iranian military targets. US Central Command said the strikes targeted air-defence systems, radar installations, maritime assets, communications sites and facilities linked to Iran’s mine-laying capabilities.
The latest attacks have intensified an ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has accused the United States of striking civilian sites and warned that it will respond firmly. Iranian officials have also reported explosions in several other coastal areas, including Konarak, Bandar Abbas, Jask, Asaluyeh, Ahvaz and Qeshm Island.
The claims of civilian casualties have not been independently verified, while the United States has said its strikes were directed at Iranian military capabilities.
