Stakeholders in Nigeria’s technology sector have called for greater investment in local talent, intelligence and innovation to accelerate the country’s digital transformation and reduce dependence on imported technology.
The call was made at the Huawei Nigeria AI and Cloud Summit 2026, held in Lagos on August 27 under the theme, “Built Local, Built Intelligent.”
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, represented by his Special Adviser on Tax and Revenue, Abdulkabir Opeyemi, said Nigeria’s technological future must be driven by locally developed solutions tailored to the country’s unique challenges.
Hamzat noted that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing requires Nigeria to move from being mainly a technology consumer to becoming a technology creator.
He stressed that building local technological capacity does not mean isolating Nigeria from the global community, but rather partnering with international companies while ensuring that Nigerians benefit from the country’s technological development.
He added that AI and cloud infrastructure could transform sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, public administration and national security while creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
Huawei Nigeria CEO Austin You reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s digital development. He said Huawei had trained more than 100,000 Nigerians and established over 250 ICT academies to strengthen the country’s technology talent base.
Meanwhile, Huawei Cloud Nigeria Managing Director Roc Bai unveiled the Huawei Nigeria Agentic Cloud, designed to support digital sovereignty and data protection in the country.
Bai said the platform would promote local data residency by ensuring that data is hosted, processed and governed within Nigeria. He identified AI democratisation, data localisation, trust and security as key priorities for Huawei Cloud’s operations in Nigeria.
The summit also featured demonstrations of AI-powered innovations in big data analytics, artificial intelligence and AI agents, highlighting the growing importance of locally developed technology in Nigeria’s digital transformation.
