Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has secured victories in three special elections, a result seen as a boost to his government’s position in its ongoing trade dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Liberal Party won the Chicoutimi–Le Fjord riding in Quebec, Beaches–East York in Toronto and North Vancouver–Capilano in British Columbia.
Carney described the results as a vote of confidence in his government’s approach at a critical time for Canada.
“At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government’s plan,” Carney said in a statement.
The biggest political shift came in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, where Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil was projected to defeat the Conservatives in a riding they had held since 2018. The region includes major aluminum producers, dairy farms and other industries affected by the escalating Canada-U.S. trade conflict.
Gobeil said the victory would help strengthen Canadian unity.
In British Columbia, Carney’s former deputy chief of staff, Braeden Caley, won the North Vancouver–Capilano seat, which had previously been held by the Liberals. The third victory came in Toronto’s Beaches–East York riding, also previously represented by a Liberal.
Liberal lawmaker Hedy Fry said the results sent a strong message to the United States that Carney continues to enjoy public support.
The elections come amid worsening relations between Canada and the United States. Trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed on August 21 after they failed to reach an agreement, prompting Trump to impose 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Canada has responded with plans for retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products.
Trump has also intensified his criticism of Canada since the collapse of the talks, including signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.”
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has argued that Canada has limited leverage in the dispute because the U.S. economy is significantly larger.
The Liberal victories could therefore strengthen Carney’s position as his government continues to confront economic and diplomatic pressure from Washington.
