Yemeni government-aligned forces have intercepted what they described as Houthi “suicide boats” attempting to approach islands in the Red Sea, according to the National Resistance Forces.
In a statement issued Monday, the forces said the boats were trying to infiltrate and approach islands under government control that are strategically located along important international shipping routes.
The National Resistance Forces said they confronted the boats after observing increased movements of Houthi vessels on Sunday and Monday. However, they did not disclose how many boats were involved or what happened to them after the interception.
The Houthis had not immediately responded to the claim.
Yemen has experienced a relative period of calm since April 2022, following years of conflict between government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country in 2014.
Since late 2023, the Houthis have intensified their involvement in regional tensions linked to the Gaza war, carrying out attacks against Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Renewed clashes have increased concerns that Yemen could once again descend into a wider conflict.
