Renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, whose iconic polka-dot paintings, sculptures and immersive installations earned her global fame, has died at the age of 97.
Kusama died on August 14 at a hospital in Tokyo, according to a statement from her studio released Thursday.
Her studio said the artist continued painting until her final days and remained committed to exploring themes of love and the human soul through her work.
Kusama was one of Japan’s most influential contemporary artists, with her works displayed at major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Her art was widely recognised for its repetitive patterns, particularly brightly coloured polka dots that appeared across paintings, sculptures and large-scale installations.
Kusama said her artistic style was influenced by hallucinations she had experienced since childhood, which she described as a world filled with spots and repetitive patterns.
Despite facing personal challenges and spending periods in psychiatric institutions, Kusama pursued her artistic ambitions and moved to New York in 1957. She later became an internationally recognised figure in contemporary art.
Kusama, who was often seen wearing her signature polka-dot outfits and orange bob hairstyle, remained dedicated to her craft throughout her long career.
Her death brings to an end the life of an artist whose distinctive visual style helped redefine contemporary art and inspired audiences across generations.
