US Designates Palestine Action, Two Other Groups as Terrorist Organisations

The United States has designated the UK-based Palestine Action group as a “specially designated global terrorist” organisation, imposing sanctions on the group over what Washington described as support for an act of terrorism.

Palestine Action, founded in 2020, was recently banned by the British government and is challenging the decision in court. The ban has resulted in thousands of arrests and has been criticised by rights organisations, which argue that it criminalises legitimate dissent.

The group says its objective is to end international involvement in what it describes as Israel’s “genocidal and apartheid regime.” It became more prominent following Israel’s military campaign in Gaza after the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.

The US State Department also designated Italy-based Autistici/Inventati (A/I Collective) and the pro-Palestinian group Masar Badil as terrorist organisations.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott described the three groups as “violent far-left terrorist groups.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US would use its economic powers to cut off their financial support.

The designations come amid a broader crackdown by the administration of President Donald Trump on organisations it describes as far-left groups.

Amnesty International has previously criticised the approach taken by the US, Israel and Russia toward dissent, warning of what it called a new “predatory” world order.
