The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has expressed deep concern over a sharp increase in executions in Iran, revealing that at least 56 people have been executed on national security-related charges since March 19, 2026.
According to the UN rights chief, 27 of the executions were linked to individuals accused of involvement in anti-government protests earlier this year. He said the growing use of the death penalty appears aimed at intimidating the public and suppressing dissent.
Türk also warned that more than 100 other people currently face possible execution on similar security-related charges, while executions for drug-related offences continue at an alarming rate.
He urged the Iranian government to immediately halt all executions, move toward abolishing the death penalty, and ensure fair trial and due process standards are respected.
Iran's diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to the UN's statement. However, Iranian authorities have consistently maintained that the country's judicial system and use of capital punishment are in accordance with domestic law and are necessary to protect public security.
