Umahi Orders Temporary Closure of Old Niger Bridge for Rehabilitation

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has ordered the temporary closure of the old Niger Bridge for major rehabilitation.

The closure will begin seven days from Friday, with motorists redirected to the Second Niger Bridge.

Umahi said the closure is necessary to allow the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras on the bridge. He added that the Federal Government plans to restore the old bridge to a standard comparable to Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge.

The minister also urged people in the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing ongoing federal road and infrastructure projects in the region.

Umahi appealed to South-East residents to support Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, saying continued political support would help sustain the government’s development projects.

He further assured contractors working on Federal Government projects that outstanding payments for completed works would soon be settled.

The old Niger Bridge is an important transport link between Anambra and Delta states, and the temporary closure is expected to redirect traffic to the newer Second Niger Bridge.
