The United Arab Emirates has extradited alleged Irish organised crime figure Daniel Kinahan to Ireland, where he is expected to appear before Dublin’s Special Criminal Court over charges linked to the running of a transnational criminal organisation.
Kinahan, 49, was flown from Dubai to Ireland on an Irish government aircraft on Sunday following a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation. His extradition was carried out under an agreement between the UAE and Ireland.
He was arrested in Dubai in April on an Irish warrant relating to alleged serious organised crime offences. Kinahan had reportedly lived in the UAE for about a decade.
US authorities identified Kinahan in 2022 as one of three alleged leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, which authorities have linked to drug trafficking, money laundering, firearms trafficking and murder. The group is also alleged to have connections with criminal organisations in South America and China.
The United States previously imposed sanctions on Kinahan and members of his family and offered a $5 million reward for information leading to their arrest.
Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and UAE Justice Minister Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi said the extradition demonstrated that people suspected of serious organised crime would have “no safe haven from justice.”
Kinahan is expected to appear before the Special Criminal Court before being transferred to the high-security Portlaoise Prison.
He is the second senior figure linked to the Kinahan organisation to be extradited from Dubai. Sean McGovern, described by an Irish judge as a senior lieutenant, was extradited in 2024 and sentenced to 24 years in prison in June after pleading guilty to directing organised crime and attempted murder.
The Kinahan organisation has been involved in a long-running and violent feud with the rival Hutch gang in Dublin. Irish authorities estimate the group’s wealth at more than €1 billion.
Kinahan has previously denied being a crime boss and has rejected allegations of criminal activity.
