Two Nigerian men, Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle, have been extradited to the United States to face prosecution over alleged child sexual exploitation and sextortion involving two teenage boys who later died by suicide.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said its Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 facilitated the extradition on Wednesday, August 26, following separate investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
According to the EFCC, the suspects were allegedly involved in sextortion schemes targeting male minors, particularly boys aged between 13 and 17. The schemes reportedly involved the use of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) to threaten victims and demand money through money-transfer services, gift cards and cryptocurrency.
The FBI linked the alleged activities to two separate cases involving American minors who reportedly died by suicide after being subjected to online sexual exploitation and extortion.
In one case, the EFCC said a 13-year-old boy received a message on Instagram from an individual who proposed an exchange of nude photographs. The individual allegedly later threatened to distribute the boy’s photographs to his Instagram contacts unless he paid money.
The EFCC said the communications allegedly continued even after the teenager indicated that he intended to take his own life.
The FBI subsequently developed intelligence identifying individuals allegedly connected to the scheme and requested the EFCC’s assistance in identifying and investigating the perpetrators.
Following the investigation, Adekunle was arrested and brought before the EFCC. The suspects were subsequently extradited to the United States to face prosecution over the allegations.
