Tourist Helicopter Crashes in Kenya, Seven Feared Dead

A tourist helicopter crashed and caught fire in Samburu County, Kenya, on Wednesday morning, with seven people — six passengers and a pilot — feared dead.

The Eurocopter EC130 B4 was reportedly flying from Loisaba to Ewaso Ngiro when it crashed at about 9:13 a.m. local time near Mount Ololokwe. Thick smoke and flames were seen at the difficult-to-reach crash site.

Kenyan Red Cross teams, local residents and other emergency responders rushed to the area to assist with the recovery operation. An Air Tropic rescue helicopter was also deployed.

A source familiar with the incident told The Sun that there were no survivors, although Kenyan police had not yet officially confirmed the identities of those on board or the number of fatalities at the time of the report.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the Air Accident Investigation Department under the Ministry of Roads and Transport would lead an investigation into the cause of the crash.

The incident occurred about 217 miles (349km) north of Nairobi, in a mountainous area near one of Kenya's well-known safari destinations.
