Sweden will deploy Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship to Finland to help monitor and protect Finnish territory amid growing security concerns, Finland’s Defence Forces said on Friday.
The deployment is expected to continue until at least the end of 2026. Finnish authorities said the Swedish equipment would strengthen air surveillance and allow Finland’s own forces to focus more on responding to potential violations and security incidents.
Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson said Sweden responded to Finland’s request for additional air-defence support because of the deteriorating regional security situation. He added that Swedish forces could, if necessary, assist Finland in responding to violations of its territory.
Sweden may also provide ground-based anti-drone systems, in addition to fighter jets and naval vessels equipped with drone-combat capabilities.
The move comes as concerns grow over drone incidents near NATO’s northern borders with Russia. Finland and Sweden, which share close defence ties, both recently joined NATO.
Finland has a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, making its security particularly sensitive amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Separately, Sweden’s Saab said it had secured a 1.2 billion Swedish crown ($126 million) contract from Finland for RBS 70 NG portable air-defence missile systems.
