A suicide bomber attacked an anti-militant rally in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, killing at least 14 people, including five police officers, and injuring more than 24 others.
The attack occurred in Kabal town in the Swat Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where hundreds of protesters had gathered near a police station to demand peace and condemn militant violence.
According to local officials, the attacker detonated explosives in the middle of the crowd as demonstrators chanted anti-militant slogans. Emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while security forces sealed off the area.
Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, condemned the bombing, describing it as a cowardly act and expressing condolences to the families of the victims. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicion has fallen on Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has carried out similar attacks in the past. The group is separate from, but allied with, Afghanistan's Taliban authorities.
The Swat Valley was once under the control of Islamist militants before the Pakistani military launched a major operation in 2007 to restore government authority. In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a renewed rise in militant attacks, particularly targeting security forces and government institutions.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the bombing as security has been tightened across the region.
