South Korea Sends First Container Ship Through Arctic Route

A South Korean container ship has begun its first commercial voyage to Europe through the Arctic, in a government-backed effort to determine whether the Northern Sea Route can become a viable alternative to traditional shipping lanes.

The PanStar Acro, which departed from Busan New Port on August 22, is carrying 837 TEUs of cargo, including car parts, chemical products and empty containers. The 2,758-TEU vessel is expected to complete the journey in about 40 to 45 days.

The ship will sail north along Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, cross the Bering Sea and enter the Northern Sea Route before making stops in Felixstowe in the United Kingdom, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Gdansk in Poland.

South Korea hopes to establish Busan as a major global maritime hub and develop Arctic shipping into a regular trade route by 2030. The Arctic route could reduce the Asia-Europe journey by around 7,000 kilometres and about 10 days compared with the traditional route through the Suez Canal.

The project comes as disruptions to global shipping linked to the conflict in the Middle East have encouraged governments and shipping companies to explore alternative routes.

However, environmental groups have raised concerns that increased Arctic shipping could contribute to further melting of polar ice and worsen climate change. Major shipping companies, including CMA CGM, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd, have also pledged to avoid Arctic routes because of environmental concerns.

South Korea has consulted Russia about the voyage, including possible assistance if the vessel encounters difficulties such as heavy ice.

The number of vessels using the Northern Sea Route has increased in recent years, with 103 transits recorded last year, compared with 97 in 2024 and 43 in 2022.

South Korean officials say the Arctic route could become an important alternative to Middle Eastern shipping lanes as technological advances and declining sea ice make seasonal navigation increasingly possible.
