The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lifted the restriction placed on the Osun State Government’s bank accounts, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
The affected accounts, held with First Bank of Nigeria and Zenith Bank, are now operational. The restriction had sparked controversy and prompted the state government to seek legal action.
The EFCC froze the accounts on August 5, ahead of the August 15 governorship election, as part of an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of about ₦11 billion in state funds. The investigation reportedly covered Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
The timing of the restriction generated political criticism, with supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke alleging that the move was politically motivated and intended to undermine his re-election campaign. The EFCC rejected the allegations, maintaining that the action was linked to an ongoing financial investigation and aimed at protecting public funds.
President Tinubu later described the account restriction as “embarrassing” and directed the EFCC to lift the freeze.
Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed that the restriction had been removed shortly after the presidential directive.
An aide to Governor Adeleke, Abdul-Jeleel Samakin, also confirmed that the accounts were active again, saying they had been unfrozen following interventions.
Following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election, the governor reportedly directed the Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, to withdraw the legal case against the EFCC.
As of the time of the report, the EFCC had not issued an official public statement confirming the lifting of the restriction.
