Sony Music and Warner Music have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic in a United States federal court, accusing the company of illegally using copyrighted songs and lyrics to train its Claude AI models.
According to the complaint filed in California, the music publishers allege that Anthropic obtained and used hundreds of copyrighted song lyrics and sheet music belonging to artists including The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson and many others.
The companies claim that Anthropic used the copyrighted materials to improve Claude's ability to respond to users' prompts. They further allege that the AI system can reproduce copyrighted lyrics word-for-word when prompted.
Sony and Warner also accused Anthropic of using copyrighted lyrics to generate large amounts of AI-created song lyrics that could compete with legitimate copyrighted works and potentially harm the music industry.
The lawsuit is part of a growing number of legal battles between copyright holders and technology companies over the use of creative works to train artificial intelligence systems.
Anthropic has rejected the allegations, describing the case as another lawsuit based on claims already being considered by the courts. The company said it would defend itself strongly and maintained that training AI models with copyrighted material can qualify as fair use.
Sony Music and Warner Music are seeking damages of up to $150,000 for each allegedly infringed copyright. They are also asking the court to prevent Anthropic from using their copyrighted works in its AI systems.
