Smart DNA Nigeria has reported that 23.6 per cent of paternity tests conducted during its 2025/2026 reporting period returned negative results, meaning the tested man was not the biological father.
The company disclosed this in its latest annual DNA Testing Report released in Lagos on Sunday, August 24, 2026.
According to the report, the figure represents a slight decline from 24 per cent recorded in the previous reporting period and 26.1 per cent in 2023.
Smart DNA, however, cautioned against interpreting the statistics to mean that one in four Nigerian children is not biologically related to the man regarded as their father. The company explained that people who undergo DNA testing are generally those who already have doubts or specific reasons for seeking confirmation.
The report also revealed that 87 per cent of the DNA tests conducted were “Peace of Mind” tests. These are privately initiated tests carried out outside legal, immigration or court proceedings. The figure increased from 83.7 per cent in the previous reporting period.
Immigration-related tests accounted for 9.7 per cent, while legal tests represented 1.9 per cent. Avuncular tests accounted for one per cent, while prenatal testing represented 0.4 per cent of recorded cases.
The report further showed that men aged 41 and above accounted for 48 per cent of age-classified male clients seeking DNA tests. Men aged 31 to 40 represented another 35.8 per cent, meaning those above 30 made up 83.8 per cent of the male testing population.
Geographically, Lagos accounted for 75.1 per cent of classified cases, up from 69 per cent in the previous reporting period.
Outside Lagos, Ogun recorded the highest number of tests, followed by Delta, Oyo, Rivers, Enugu, Edo, Abuja, Imo and Kwara.
