Sahara Power Enterprise Group has commenced the construction of a 12-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant (IPP) at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc in Lagos.
The project, valued at $12 million, consists of six gas-fired units, each generating 2MW. Construction began on Thursday and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
The plant is expected to improve electricity supply to businesses and communities in Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Sahara Power Enterprise Group’s Group Managing Director, Kola Adesina, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s energy sector.
He said the initiative would provide more reliable and efficient electricity, which would help increase productivity, economic growth and value creation.
According to Sahara Power, the plant will use modern gas-powered generation technology that meets environmental, operational and safety standards. The six-unit design will also provide standby capacity, ensuring continued electricity supply when some units are undergoing maintenance.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric Plc, Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, said the project would provide a more dependable and cost-effective electricity supply for businesses and communities in the area while supporting economic activity and job creation.
Construction of the power plant will be carried out by Cummins, which will provide its expertise in power generation and energy infrastructure.
The project is expected to supply electricity to industrial clusters, commercial centres, residential communities and public institutions around the Ogba axis, while also promoting business development, investment and employment.
