A Russian military serviceman has been killed and his wife injured after their car exploded in the Pushkinsky suburb of St Petersburg on Thursday, August 27, 2026, according to Russian authorities.
The Investigative Committee said the man died in the incident while his wife sustained injuries. Authorities have not officially released his identity or military rank.
However, Russian media outlet Fontanka reported that the victim was a 53-year-old lieutenant colonel and a senior military officer. Ukrainian media later claimed he served in Russia’s Aerospace Forces, within the Air Force and Air and Missile Defence units.
The explosion occurred at about 10am local time. Witnesses said the blast severely damaged the vehicle.
Investigators and forensic specialists were deployed to examine the scene, while authorities opened a criminal investigation. Officials initially described the incident as a vehicle fire and did not officially confirm that an explosive device was involved.
The blast comes amid a series of attacks and explosions targeting Russian military personnel and figures associated with Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Russia has previously accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate senior military officials, although Kyiv has accepted responsibility for some attacks while denying involvement in others.
No group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s explosion, and Ukraine has not commented on the incident.
