Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have renewed their assault on the strategic city of Al-Obeid, while a series of drone strikes targeted Khartoum and other parts of the country, according to witnesses and medical sources.
Eight drones reportedly targeted Al-Obeid on Wednesday, prompting the Sudanese army to activate its air-defence systems. Medical sources said two people were killed and several others were injured.
Residents in Khartoum and the northern city of Atbara also reported drone attacks, marking the first such strikes in the areas since May. In Khartoum North, a drone crashed into the courtyard of a mosque early Wednesday, damaging part of the structure.
Neither the RSF nor the Sudanese army immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Reuters said it was unable to independently verify who launched the drones or where they were launched from.
Al-Obeid has been at the centre of a prolonged RSF campaign for control, with previous drone attacks and siege tactics severely disrupting electricity, fuel, food and water supplies. The city is estimated to have about 500,000 residents, including around 100,000 people displaced by the conflict.
The latest escalation comes after both the RSF and the army reinforced their positions across the Kordofan region in recent weeks, raising fears of renewed heavy fighting.
The RSF continues to control much of Darfur in western Sudan, while the army holds most of the eastern part of the country. The army has also made recent gains in Kordofan, Blue Nile and West Darfur.
The conflict began in April 2023 after tensions between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted into fighting over plans to integrate the two forces and pave the way for elections. The war has since created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.
