Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has recounted a remarkable incident involving a retired soldier who initially asked the police to kill his university-student son after the young man was arrested for cultism.
Disu said the incident occurred while he was serving as a Divisional Police Officer in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State. According to him, the retired soldier visited the police station and demanded that his son, who was being detained for alleged cultism, be killed.
The father reportedly remained at the station for several hours, insisting that the police should deal with his son because he did not want him back at home.
However, the situation changed dramatically the following morning when the same man returned to the police station carrying food for his detained son.
Disu said the incident made him realise the conflicting emotions parents can experience when dealing with troubled children.
He recalled wondering what would have happened if the police had actually acted on the father's earlier demand.
The IGP shared the story during the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue organised by the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja. The event focused on youth leadership, security, responsibility and efforts to discourage violence and thuggery.
Disu said the incident also demonstrated the importance of parents taking responsibility for the upbringing, discipline and welfare of their children.
He added that the young man eventually completed his education, got married and became a father himself.
