The Plateau State Police Command has arrested and detained a police officer accused of shooting an unarmed trader in the leg at a checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on August 11 when the trader, identified as Danladi, was transporting vegetables in his van to the Southeast and was stopped at a checkpoint.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Command, Superintendent Alfred Alabo, confirmed that the officer had been disarmed and taken into custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
According to Alabo, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Riyom Division immediately responded after receiving information about the incident, disarmed the officer and transferred him to the State CID for questioning and disciplinary proceedings.
He added that the Commissioner of Police had directed the DPO to visit the injured trader in hospital and provide an update on his condition.
Alabo said investigations were still ongoing and assured the public that the command would provide further updates as the facts of the incident emerge.
The police spokesperson also urged members of the public, particularly motorists, to avoid confronting armed security personnel during disagreements at checkpoints. He advised anyone who feels mistreated by an officer to report the matter through established complaint channels.
He said the police would investigate both sides of the incident to establish what actually happened.
Alabo further disclosed that the officers involved were not originally attached to the Plateau State Police Command but were in the state to perform assigned duties under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police.
He assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures were already being taken against the officer and pledged that the command would work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
