At least nine travelers lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries following a fatal road accident along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway in Bauchi State.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on Monday near Zangoro Village. The accident involved a commercial Toyota 18-seater bus and a MAN diesel tipper truck traveling in opposite directions.
The FRSC said a tyre burst on the bus is believed to have caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle collided with the tipper. The impact triggered a fire that engulfed the bus.
A total of 17 male passengers were involved in the crash. Nine victims were burnt beyond recognition, while eight others suffered varying degrees of injuries.
FRSC rescue officials responded to the scene shortly after receiving a distress call. The injured victims were evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue.
The vehicles involved and recovered property were handed over to the Bauchi State Police Command for further investigation. The FRSC urged motorists to ensure their vehicles, especially tyres, are in good condition before embarking on any journey to help prevent avoidable road accidents.
