The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received 37 Nigerian citizens who voluntarily returned from the Republic of Türkiye through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
According to a statement issued on Monday, the returnees arrived aboard a chartered flight following coordination by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe and orderly return of Nigerians stranded abroad.
NEMA said its Abuja Operations Office, working alongside relevant government agencies and humanitarian partners, coordinated the reception process to ensure the returnees were treated with dignity and compassion. The exercise included registration, profiling, medical screening, and the provision of immediate humanitarian assistance before they were referred for reintegration support.
Speaking during the reception, the Head of NEMA's Abuja Operations Office, Pharm. Zakari Abubakar, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to protecting the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians through effective inter-agency collaboration.
He urged the returnees to embrace the opportunity for a fresh start, remain law-abiding, and take advantage of government reintegration programmes designed to help them rebuild their lives.
The reception involved officials from the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, airport authorities, security agencies, and other key stakeholders.
The latest operation is part of the Federal Government's broader efforts to safely return and reintegrate Nigerians from different countries. In recent months, NEMA has also received 123 returnees from Algeria and 181 others from Libya under the Assisted Voluntary Return programme coordinated in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
