Sudanese armed forces have discovered a mass grave containing at least 25 bodies in Kurmuk, in Blue Nile State, following the army’s recapture of the town from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Local authorities said the remains included women, children and hospital workers. Kurmuk Commissioner Abdel Aty Mohamed al-Faki said the victims were allegedly executed near Jebel Fankat, a strategic hilltop previously used by the RSF to launch drone attacks.
The mass grave was reportedly uncovered during military search operations in the northeastern part of Kurmuk, about a month after government forces regained control of the town following weeks of intense fighting.
The RSF has not commented on the allegations.
The paramilitary group has been fighting Sudan’s armed forces since April 2023 and has faced repeated accusations of mass killings and other abuses in several parts of the country.
The discovery comes as fighting continues in Blue Nile State, where the RSF has reportedly carried out further drone attacks on Kurmuk.
Meanwhile, heavy clashes have also continued in West Darfur, an area considered a major RSF stronghold.
Sudan’s war has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 40,000 people killed and more than 14 million displaced from their homes, according to the World Health Organization.
