Thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City on Tuesday for a mass funeral after the remains of 112 people were recovered from the rubble of homes destroyed during an Israeli airstrike in the Sabra neighbourhood in November 2023.
The victims, members of the Abu Sharia and al-Hasayna families, were buried nearly three years after the attack, following recent recovery efforts by rescue teams. Palestinian officials say the 2023 strike claimed the lives of 308 members of the two families, including women and children, while many others are still missing.
Rows of coffins draped in Palestinian flags were carried through Gaza City as mourners paid their final respects. Family members, community leaders and humanitarian workers described the funeral as one of the largest held in Gaza since the conflict began.
According to Palestinian authorities, about 157 people from the attack remain unaccounted for, with many believed to still be trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
The funeral took place amid continued tensions despite a ceasefire agreement. Palestinian officials say recent Israeli strikes have caused additional casualties, while reconstruction efforts continue to face significant challenges due to widespread destruction and limited recovery equipment.
Community leaders called for greater international support to help recover missing bodies, clear debris and accelerate the rebuilding of Gaza, stressing that thousands of families are still waiting for answers about loved ones who remain missing.
