Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has criticised the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that they have increased hardship and worsened the cost of living for millions of Nigerians.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the unveiling of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship, senatorial and House of Assembly candidates, Makinde said the country needs a comprehensive reset of its economy, security and governance. He was represented at the event by party leader Babatunde Tijani.
Makinde said the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira were introduced without adequate measures to protect ordinary Nigerians from their economic impact.
According to him, the government should have put effective support systems in place before implementing the reforms, warning that introducing multiple major policies at the same time placed an unnecessary burden on citizens.
He noted that many Nigerians now struggle to afford basic necessities, including regular meals, while the rising cost of fuel and other goods has made daily life increasingly difficult. Makinde added that the success of any economic policy should be measured by its impact on citizens' welfare rather than official economic indicators.
Also speaking at the event, APM National Chairman Sanyaolu Abayomi urged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and support leaders capable of addressing the country's economic and security challenges.
Abayomi maintained that although the government says the economy is improving, many Nigerians have yet to experience the benefits. He called for temporary relief measures to cushion the effects of ongoing reforms while long-term economic recovery efforts continue.
He also presented the APM as an alternative political platform and appealed to eligible voters to support the party in future elections.
