Liberia Agrees to Receive 1,200 Deportees from US.

Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 deportees from the United States, including people from Africa, North and South America, and the Caribbean.

Liberian Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah said the first group of 20 deportees is expected to arrive on Thursday. He stressed that those arriving would be treated as “guests of the Republic” and would remain free to leave Liberia if they wished.

The agreement is part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to deport migrants to countries other than their countries of origin. Rights groups say the US has already sent about 22,000 people to 26 countries under such arrangements.

The Liberia-US agreement was reached in 2025 and made public in March 2026. It includes provisions allowing asylum seekers and others who require protection to remain in Liberia.

The deal is facing several legal challenges in the United States. It has also been linked to the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national whom US authorities have sought to deport to Liberia.

As part of its cooperation with Liberia, the US previously extended the validity of certain Liberian visas and committed $124 million to Liberia’s health sector.
