A major fire broke out at a fuel storage depot in the Tanjaro area near Sulaimaniyah in Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, injuring about 20 people and destroying dozens of fuel tankers.
The blaze erupted shortly before midnight and sent huge flames and thick clouds of smoke over the area. Several explosions were reported as the fire spread through the facility.
Local authorities said no deaths had been reported and that the injuries were minor. At least two people reportedly suffered burns, with one requiring hospital treatment.
Local reports said the fire destroyed 34 petrol tankers and four gas-oil tankers, while more than three million litres of fuel were reportedly consumed by the blaze.
Emergency services and security forces responded to the scene, while firefighting teams worked to contain the flames. Authorities later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and officials have yet to release a full assessment of the damage.
Despite the scale of the incident, local fuel market officials said they did not expect the fire to cause an increase in petrol prices across the region.
