North Korean leader Kim Jong Un commemorated the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice by visiting war memorials and cemeteries with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, state media reported on Monday.
Kim paid tribute to fallen soldiers, met with war veterans, and laid wreaths at the graves of revolutionary fighters. During the ceremonies, North Korea again described the 1950–1953 Korean War as a "great victory," despite the conflict ending with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
Ju Ae was seen accompanying her father throughout the commemorations, greeting veterans and taking a prominent position during official events. It marked her first appearance at the annual armistice anniversary ceremonies, further fueling speculation that she is being groomed for a future leadership role.
South Korean officials noted that this was also Ju Ae's first visit to the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery and the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Earlier this year, South Korea's intelligence agency said there were credible signs that she is being positioned as Kim's successor.
Kim also visited the cemetery honoring Chinese volunteer soldiers and paid respects at the grave of Mao Anying, the son of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, in a gesture seen as reflecting improving relations between Pyongyang and Beijing.
