Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has launched the distribution of 90,000 bags of assorted grains to vulnerable households across the state’s 34 local government areas.
The distribution, which began in Kaita Local Government Area on Wednesday, is aimed at helping residents cope with economic hardship and improving food security.
Radda directed government officials, traditional and religious leaders, and community committees involved in the exercise to ensure that the grains reach the intended beneficiaries fairly and transparently.
The governor said the initiative was part of his administration’s broader social intervention programme, which includes support for women, widows and other vulnerable groups.
He explained that the government had previously assisted 7,220 widows across the state, with each beneficiary receiving a 25kg bag of rice and N10,000 in cash.
Radda stressed that food distribution alone could not permanently solve food insecurity. He said the government was also investing in agriculture by providing farmers with subsidised fertiliser and other inputs, while expanding irrigation through solar and petrol-powered pumps and tube wells.
According to him, the goal is to increase food production, reduce production costs, create jobs in rural communities and improve household incomes.
The governor also warned against favouritism, saying social status, personal relationships or other considerations must not prevent deserving residents from benefiting from the programme.
State Community Development Programme Coordinator, Kamaladden Kabir, said the initiative would particularly target widows, elderly people, persons with disabilities and low-income families.
The Chairman of Kaita LGA, Bello Lawal, described the intervention as timely and praised the state government for its efforts in agriculture, education, healthcare and social welfare.
