Kano Government Commits N996bn to 1,557 Projects Across the State

The Kano State Government says it has committed N996.29 billion to 1,557 development projects across the state’s 44 local government areas in nearly three years under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, Nura Maaji Sumaila, disclosed this during an international press briefing on project implementation, distribution, procurement compliance and the administration’s financial performance.

According to Sumaila, 867 projects, representing 55.68 per cent, have been completed, while 654 projects, or about 42 per cent, are still ongoing. Another 26 projects are at the award stage, while 10 projects have been planned and are awaiting award.

He said the ministry had approved Certificates of No Objection worth N695.20 billion, representing 69.78 per cent of the total contract value, while payment certificates valued at N444.75 billion had been vetted.

Sumaila said the projects were spread across both urban and rural areas. Of the total, 598 projects worth N299.36 billion are located in the eight metropolitan local government areas, while 653 projects valued at N287.90 billion are in the 36 rural LGAs.

He highlighted several major investments, including the N113.19 billion mass housing project at Rijiyar Gwangwan in Dawakin Kudu, the N24.77 billion Katsina Road expansion, the N21.90 billion Modern Cities infrastructure project, and the N27.74 billion Madobi-Yako-Kafin Maiyaki/Kiru Road project.

The commissioner also listed the N22 billion Rural Model City housing project, which is expected to cover the 36 rural local government areas.

Sumaila explained that some strategic projects cut across several LGAs and should not be counted as individual projects for each local government because doing so could lead to double counting.

He acknowledged that some high-value projects, including the Dawakin Kudu mass housing scheme and Rural Model City project, remain at the award stage pending completion of due-process requirements.

The commissioner assured residents and development partners that the government would continue to strengthen procurement monitoring, payment certification and project evaluation to ensure transparency, accountability and value for money.
