The Kano Emirate has introduced drug testing as a requirement for individuals seeking to become traditional rulers within the emirate.
The District Head of Dambatta, Dr. Mansur Adnan, disclosed this on Saturday during a sensitisation programme on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking held at his palace in Dambatta.
According to Adnan, the measure was introduced because of the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals and society. He said prospective traditional rulers would now be required to undergo drug testing before ascending traditional thrones.
The sensitisation programme brought together district and ward heads from Dambatta Local Government Area to raise awareness about drug abuse and trafficking.
The NDLEA Zonal Commander in Dambatta, Zailani Muhammad, said the agency’s primary objective was to combat drug abuse and trafficking in order to protect lives and the future of society.
He urged traditional rulers and residents to cooperate with the agency by reporting drug traffickers and locations where youths sell or consume illicit drugs.
Muhammad said the agency remained open to receiving reports, suggestions and complaints concerning efforts to tackle drug abuse and trafficking.
He stressed that success in the fight against drug abuse required the cooperation of government authorities, traditional rulers, parents, teachers and other members of society.
During the programme, he also educated participants about the effects of drug abuse, factors that could push young people into drug use and warning signs parents should watch for. He displayed some commonly abused drugs and explained their dangers.
Meanwhile, the Dambatta Divisional Police Officer, SP Ibrahim Kwasarawa, said many crimes committed by youths in communities were linked to drug abuse.
He urged parents to closely monitor their children and guide them towards positive and responsible behaviour.
