President of Iraq's Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Monday during his first official visit to Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, improving border security, and addressing key regional issues. Officials from both sides emphasized the importance of closer coordination to promote peace and stability in the region.
Speaking after the meeting, Barzani said Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region share common interests as neighboring entities and expressed optimism about increasing economic cooperation for the benefit of their peoples.
A major topic of discussion was the ongoing integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syria's national institutions under an agreement reached earlier this year. The agreement provides for the incorporation of SDF fighters into the country's defence and interior ministries while preserving stability in northeastern Syria.
Barzani is also expected to meet senior Kurdish political and military leaders during his visit, including SDF officials and Kurdish members of the Syrian parliament, to discuss the future of Kurdish rights and political participation in Syria.
Security issues were another priority, with both sides reviewing measures to combat cross-border smuggling, address the situation in detention camps housing thousands of suspected ISIS fighters and their families, and counter the activities of armed groups operating along the Syria-Iraq border.
The visit marks another step in the growing diplomatic engagement between Erbil and Damascus as both governments seek stronger political, economic, and security cooperation in the post-Assad era.
