Iran has warned neighbouring countries not to cooperate with the United States in its campaign to weaken Iran’s economy, saying countries that assist Washington could be treated as enemies.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, issued the warning in an interview with Iranian state broadcaster IRIB on Saturday.
Rezaei said Iran would initially seek dialogue with neighbouring countries and attempt to persuade them to distance themselves from the United States. However, he warned that countries that continued supporting Washington could eventually face Iranian action.
The warning follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington would launch what he described as the most severe economic operation against Iran. Trump also threatened “tremendous economic consequences” for countries that provide Iran with economic support.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced the warning, saying countries would have to choose between supporting the United States or opposing it.
Rezaei accused the US of hoping that economic pressure would create divisions within Iranian society and trigger protests that could weaken the government.
He also warned that Iran could target alternative oil-shipping routes in the Gulf if regional countries participate in the US economic campaign.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major point of tension in the conflict. Iran restricted shipping through the strategic waterway early in the war, contributing to sharp increases in the prices of oil and other commodities.
Several Middle Eastern countries that depend on the strait for exports have since begun seeking alternative trade routes.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also condemned the planned US measures, describing them as an attempt to impose “extraterritorial sovereignty” on other countries.
The conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel has continued since February 28, while diplomatic efforts to end the fighting remain stalled.
