US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack has accused Israel of failing to give the United States adequate warning before carrying out air strikes on a Syrian military base this week.
Barrack described the Israeli attacks on the Abu Duhur military base in northern Syria as an “unnecessary escalation” and suggested the strikes may have been intended to provoke Türkiye, which has significant influence in the region.
However, Israeli officials rejected Barrack’s claims. Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel had provided intelligence information to authorised US officials before the strikes. He also accused Barrack of making inaccurate statements that contradicted US President Donald Trump’s position.
The disagreement comes amid growing tensions between Israel and Türkiye over their military and political roles in Syria. Türkiye has condemned the Israeli strikes as reckless, while Israel has warned Ankara against expanding its military presence in Syria.
Israel said the strikes were carried out because it believed Türkiye was preparing to deploy troops to the Abu Duhur area. Türkiye denied the allegation.
Barrack said the US had determined that the alleged Turkish military activity at the base was not taking place. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani also said Syria had informed Israel that there were no plans to establish a Turkish military base at Abu Duhur.
According to the Syrian government, Turkish military personnel had visited the facility as part of ongoing military cooperation involving training and the exchange of expertise.
Israel has continued conducting military operations in Syria since the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The United States has sought to mediate between Israel and Syria to reduce tensions, although the Trump administration has continued its strong support for Israel.
