Iran says it has launched missile and drone attacks against military positions hosting US forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said missiles were fired at US-linked military bases in Jordan, while Iran’s army reported drone attacks against US military assets at Al Minhad airbase in the UAE.
Jordan said its forces intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace.
The Iranian attacks came after the United States carried out strikes on Larak Island, targeting two rocket launchers that US Central Command said were preparing to deploy naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran acknowledged that the US attack caused casualties among IRGC personnel and civilians, although it did not provide a specific figure.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran was not seeking war but would not remain passive in the face of further US attacks.
The IRGC also claimed that its forces had shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, the IRGC said a supertanker caught fire after striking two sea mines while attempting to pass through the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran warned ships against using routes it considers unauthorised.
The latest escalation has raised concerns about the security of one of the world's most important oil-shipping routes. Oil prices reportedly climbed by more than 2 percent following the US strike.
The developments have also complicated diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. US officials have recently indicated that negotiations with Tehran have lost momentum, while Washington has increased economic pressure and threatened further sanctions.
The conflict is also placing pressure on the US military. According to US media reports, senior military commanders have warned Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth that maintaining large-scale operations against Iran could leave American forces overstretched in other parts of the world.
More than 50,000 US troops have reportedly remained on heightened alert as President Donald Trump continues to demand that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept US conditions for ending the conflict.
The latest exchange of attacks raises fears that the Iran war could expand further across the Middle East, particularly as US forces remain stationed at military facilities throughout the region.
