Iran has granted special permission for a number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, following repeated requests from the Iraqi government.
Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported that securing permission for Iraqi oil shipments was one of the main issues discussed during Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf’s recent visit to Iraq.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi confirmed that Iran had facilitated the movement of vessels carrying Iraqi oil through the strait in recent days. He said Baghdad had also discussed ways to continue exporting Iraqi oil through the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted, with shipping traffic significantly below pre-war levels and vessels continuing to face attacks in the area. Iraq, which produced about 4 million barrels of oil per day before the Iran war, has been particularly affected by the disruption.
To reduce its dependence on the strait, Iraq is working to increase oil exports through Turkey’s Ceyhan port and is also considering exports through Syria’s Baniyas port and Jordan’s Aqaba port.
The development could provide some relief for Iraq’s oil exports, but Baghdad says the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains complicated.
