A Hungarian court has ordered the one-month pre-trial detention of a Polish bus driver suspected of falling asleep at the wheel in a crash that killed 12 people and injured dozens.
The bus, carrying 57 Polish pilgrims, veered off the road and overturned near Mezőkeresztes in eastern Hungary around 1 a.m. on Sunday while returning from the Medjugorje shrine in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prosecutors said the current investigation indicates that the driver was too fatigued to operate the vehicle safely and may have fallen asleep while driving.
Twelve people died either at the scene or after being taken to hospital. Three victims suffered life-threatening injuries, while another 20 were seriously injured.
Police detained the driver and questioned him over suspected negligent driving resulting in mass fatalities. He reportedly declined to make a statement.
Prosecutors sought his continued detention, citing concerns that he could flee or interfere with the investigation. Under Hungarian law, suspects can initially be held for up to 72 hours without a court order.
The Miskolc District Court subsequently ordered the driver to remain in custody for one month.
If convicted of negligently causing a road accident resulting in mass fatalities, the driver could face two to eight years in prison, according to Hungarian authorities.
