Sustained gunfire and explosions were heard across several areas of Niamey, Niger’s capital, early Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the cause initially unclear.
According to witnesses and security sources, heavy fighting was reported around Diori Hamani International Airport and near the presidential palace. A security source said armed attackers had targeted the airport and attempted to breach the security perimeter surrounding the presidency.
A local resident also reported intense gunfire and explosions at Base 101, a major military installation in the city. Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a member of Niger’s Bureau of the Consultative Council and deputy in the Alliance of Sahel States parliament, said the base had come under attack but that security forces had regained control.
Another security source said troops had launched search operations and that some attackers had been neutralised, while others fled. Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims.
Videos circulating online appeared to show armoured vehicles being deployed near the airport as security forces reinforced the area.
Niger has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum. Since then, the government led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani has reduced cooperation with Western countries, strengthened ties with Russia and joined Mali and Burkina Faso in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
