Google Maps has changed the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States, following US President Donald Trump’s decision to rename the lake.
Google said the change reflects an update by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). However, users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while users outside the United States and Canada will see both names.
The lake, which borders the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York, has become another point of tension between Washington and Ottawa as trade relations deteriorate.
Trump’s administration officially announced the name change on Thursday, after the president had previously threatened to rename the lake as tensions with Canada increased. The move follows the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian products, with Canada responding with its own tariffs.
Canadian officials have rejected the new name. Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the Indigenous origins of the name Ontario, saying it comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, meaning “the lake is beautiful” or “the lake is big.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also dismissed Trump’s decision, saying the lake has been known as Lake Ontario for hundreds of years and will continue to be called that in Canada.
Google previously adopted a similar approach when Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the “Gulf of America.” However, Apple Maps was still displaying Lake Ontario for US users as of Sunday.
The dispute over the lake’s name comes amid a broader deterioration in US-Canada relations, with Trump repeatedly criticizing Canada’s trade policies and questioning aspects of its relationship with the United States.
