At least five people have died and 41 others remain missing after a passenger ferry caught fire off Indonesia's Madura Island on Sunday, according to the country's National Search and Rescue Agency.
The vessel, Mutiara Sentosa 2, was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire broke out. The ferry was carrying a total of 271 people, including 232 passengers and 39 crew members.
Rescue officials said 225 people were safely evacuated, while search and rescue teams continued efforts to locate those still missing.
Videos from the scene showed thick black smoke rising from the burning ferry as passengers wearing life jackets gathered on the deck awaiting rescue.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and an investigation is expected once rescue operations are completed.
Indonesia, a country made up of more than 17,000 islands, has experienced several maritime accidents in recent years due to poor enforcement of safety regulations and challenging weather conditions.
